Bike Tech: The Hövding Airbag Helmet for Cyclists

I like fashion but I will put my safety before a fancy hat. Helmets, however, are always going to look perfect for the cyclist and terrible for matching an outfit. So it’s with a little surprise that I come to the Hövding Airbag for Cyclists.

You put it on as a sort of zip-up collar that is heavier on the back of your neck so that when you ride, it’s more comfortable. There were all sorts of algorithms that were calculated into detecting exactly when the airbag should be deployed. It is rechargeable so and it can be turned off and on depending on whether or not the button of the zipper is snapped on the collar or not.  The only drawback is that it wholly depends on the movement of the cyclist for the airbag to deploy when it should. So if you’re like me and don’t see the low hanging branch in front of you because you are too busy looking to avoid the big gnarly roots in the ground, you’ll probably end up with a lot more than a bit of skin missing on your forehead.

Once deployed, it is not usable, much like when you get a crack in your helmet. It has a black box in the collar so send it back so that they can use that info to better their technology. You can also use the casing in different colors to match with your outfit if you don’t like the simple black of the Hövding. So if you have €399 to shell out, this interesting innovation can be yours.
